Green Bay Packers 2010 Wide Receiver Preview
Greg Jennings
Jennings has now posted back-to-back 1,000 yards seasons, but his
2009 season was still a disappointment for fantasy owners. He missed
one game with injury and only caught five passes in his next two
games, but to finish with just 68 receptions and four touchdowns
was unacceptable for his high preseason ranking. On the plus side,
he did average 16.8 yards a catch, and that is among the best in
the NFL.
The 16.8 average is what Jennings is all about. He is similar to
Miles Austin in that any time he gets his hands on the ball he can
score. That is why is the four touchdowns in 2009 were so disappointing.
Having a great quarterback is a huge plus when selecting your first
wide receiver and there aren't many better fantasy quarterbacks
than Aaron Rodgers. He threw for 4,434 yards and 30 touchdowns and
only seven interceptions in just his second season as a starter.
For Jennings to succeed to his fullest the Packers must improve
their pass-blocking. They gave up a league-lead 51 sacks in 2009
and if Rodgers gets knocked out of a game, Jennings' value falls
tremendously. The good news for the offensive line is that the Packers
resigned veteran tackle Chad Clifton and spent their #1 pick on
tackle Bryan Bulaga and a fifth-round pick on guard Marshall Newhouse.
Having Donald Driver and tight end Jermichael Finley on the field
will take away looks from Jennings, but it will also free up the
constant double-coverage that Jennings would otherwise have gotten
and allow him to break free for more big plays.
