San Diego Chargers 2010 Quarterback Preview
Phillip Rivers
Rivers has another fantasy-stud season throwing for over 4,000 yards
and 28 touchdowns. Rivers has firmly established himself as one
of the best quarterbacks in the league, but there are many questions
that surround his team.
Receiver Vincent Jackson has been suspended by San Diego for three
games (NFL Personal Conduct Policy) and have announced they want
to trade Jackson who declined to sign his restricted free-agent
tender offer. That leaves the Chargers with the young, upcoming
6-5 Malcom Floyd and Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates as their only
legitimate receiving targets. The Chargers did get some depth by
signing receiver Josh Reed and tight end Randy McMichael, but until
either Jackson returns to the Chargers or the trade him and get
another receiver, Rivers' fantasy value is lower in 2010.
The offensive line had excellent pass blocking doubt the fact that
it couldn't run block, but left tackle Marcus McNeil, like Jackson,
declined to sign his restricted free-agent tender offer. He may
miss camp and some games, so this is one to watch if you intend
to draft Rivers.
Finally, the departure of LaDainian Tomlinson is probably a positive
for Rivers. First off, it is now his team, second the Chargers drafted
running back Ryan Mathews with the 12th overall pick. He should
give them a consistent, hard-nose run attack that they lacked in
2009.
You can't like a road game against Cincinnati in week 16, but San
Francisco and Kansas City at home previous to that is nice.
