New York Giants 2010 Wide Receiver Preview

Steve Smith

The choice of New York Giant receiver Steve Smith above Carolina Panther receiver Steve Smith simply comes down to their quarterback. The Panthers have hope with the young Matt Moore and second-round pick Jimmy Clausen, but the Giants have the veteran Eli Manning who just had the best season of his career throwing for over 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Of course the other big difference between the two Smiths is their reception totals versus the big-play potential of the two receivers. In a PPR-league, the Giants' Smith is a much easier pick. In non-PPR-leagues, Carolina's Smith will likely get more yardage with good quarterback play, but keep in mind he has only averaged seven touchdowns a season for the last four years...the same number the Giants' Smith scored in 2009.
The fear for Steve Smith investors is that the accession of the Giants 2009 #1 pick, Hakeem Nicks, will mean less looks and less catches for Smith. This is very likely, but they make a great duo and should feed off each other with Smith free to roam the middle of the field and grabbing the little ten yard catches at will while Hicks keeps the defenses locked on him on the sidelines.

2009 Statistics: 107 Rec - 1,220 Yds - 7 TD's

2010 Projection: 92 Rec - 1,105 Yds - 6 TD's
