2009 - 2010 Defensemen Preseason Preview Coming
Mike Green
|
 |
A full season from Mike Green
should catapult him into the #1 slot at defensemen. |
1. Mike Green - Capitals - 2009 Preview:
Green lead all defenseman in goals and points while only dressing
for 68 games last season. He's every fantasy owners number one pick
at the blue line this season, considering the offense he's surrounded
by and the numbers he posted last season. He alson brought a +/-
rating of 24. His playoff performance doesn't affect most fantasy
hockey owners, so ignore what you saw in the post-season.
2008 - 09 Statistics:
Goals 31 - Assists 42 - Pts. 63
2009 - 10 Projection:
Goals 26 - Assists 41 - Pts. 67
2. Duncan Keith - Blackhawks - 2009 Preview:
Keith only had 8 goals last year, but had a +/- rating of 33 to
go along with 44 points. Here is this years most improved defenseman
as far as fantasy hockey is concerned. Rememver, Chara didn't score
many until he arrived in Bean town. Keith's fellow blue liner Brian
Cambell out scored him last season, but Cambell's +/- of 5 keeps
him down a bit further in the rankings.
2008 - 09 Statistics:
Goals 8 - Assists 36 - Pts. 48
2009 - 10
Projection: Goals
16 - Assists 43 - Pts. 59
3. Zedeno Chara - Bruins - 2009 Preview:
He's nobody's favorite unless you live in Boston. As a fantasy hockey
owner, you put that behind yourself and draft him if you can. Chara's
role is to play defense and contribute offensively, which he proved
he can do. Last season's 50 point campaign was accompanied with
a +/- rating of 23.
2008
- 09 Statistics: Goals
19 - Assists 31 - Pts. 50
2009 - 10
Projection: Goals
17 - Assists 39 - Pts. 58
4. Brian Rafalski - Red Wings - 2009 Preview:
Rafalski's numbers were a notch below Lidstrom's last season, so
this is a gamble. I find it hard to believe Nicklas Lidstrom will
dress for more than 70 games this season. Rafalski moves in as the
Wings number on point man on the blue line in 2009 -2010 and makes
him the defenseman of choice for fantasy owners.
2008
- 09 Statistics: Goals
10 - Assists 49 - Pts. 59
2009 - 10
Projection: Goals
15 - Assists 48 - Pts. 58

5. Shea Weber - 2009 Preview:
When a defenseman can net 20 plus goals in Nashville you
know you have somethng special. Nashville has a solid team, which
competed very well against the Wings last season. Weber steady performance
as a scoring threat from the blue line has him in my top five. The
+/- rating was basically flat lined last season and I anticipate
that number to improve.
2008
- 09 Statistics: Goals
23 - Assists 30 - Pts. 53
2009 - 10
Projection: Goals
19 - Assists 39 - Pts. 58
6. Sheldon Souray - Oilers - 2009 Preview:
The Oilers are steadily improving and this may be the year they
make some noise in the post-season. Sheldon Souray has been a steady
scoring defenseman for fantasy owners for the last few years and
no reason for things to change now. 20 plus goals and 30 plus assists
makes Souray hard to pass up in anyone's draft.
2008
- 09 Statistics: Goals
23 - Assists 30 - Pts. 53
2009 - 10
Projection: Goals
20 - Assists 37 - Pts. 57
7. Nicklas Lidstrom - Red Wings - 2009 Preview:
The usual policiy is not to stray away from players unless they
give you good reason. So, Lidstrom makes the top ten on experience
and his track record. Part of the record says his offensive numbers
should have dipped last season which wasn't the case. I see less
games and less points, but still one of the best.
