2008 First Base Preseason Preview
James Loney
|
 |
He may be a bit of a gamble
above veterans Konerko, Gonzales and Lee, but he
could payoff big and be a top 5 fantasy first basemen. |
8. James Loney - Dodgers - 2008 Preview:
The young lefty came on strong after being brought up from
AAA Las Vegas in 2007. He has .300 - 30 home run - 100 RBI
potential and maybe more. He is just 23, so he could go
either way in 2008, but the Dodgers have a very good offensive
line-up, which now includes slugger Andruw Jones, should
provide Loney with plenty of opportunity to have a big fantasy
season.
2007 Statistics:
.331 - 15 HR's - 67 RBI's - 41 Runs.
2008 Projection:
.318 - 35 HR's - 109 RBI's - 100 Runs.
9. Paul Konerko - White Sox - 2008 Preview:
He is not the most consistent player year-to-year, but he
is always good for 30 home runs and if you catch him in
the right season, he can bat .300 or hit over 40 home runs
for your fantasy team. The White Sox struggled on offense
as a whole, so if they improve, Konerko should improve with
them.
2007 Statistics:
.259 - 31 HR's - 90 RBI's - 71 Runs.
2008 Projection:
.271 - 37 HR's - 104 RBI's - 88 Runs.

10. (Tie) Adrian Gonzales - Padres - 2008
Preview:
A very solid hitter at just 26, even though he plays in
the tough to hit in Qualcomm Stadium. The rest of the Padre
offense is still suspect, even with the addition of veterans
Jim Edmunds and Tadahito Iguchi and this will keep Gonzales
from improving very much from his 2007 numbers.
2007 Statistics:
.282 - 30 HR's - 100 RBI's - 101 Runs.
2008 Projection: .288
- 29 HR's - 101 RBI's - 95 Runs.
10. (Tie) Derek Lee - Cubs - 2008 Preview:
The veteran has lost his base-stealing ability and is doubtful
to ever return to his 2005 - 46 home run form, but he is
still a very good veteran fantasy first basemen. In addition,
the Cub's should have a heck of an line-up to put on the
field in 2008 and Lee will be right in the middle of it
providing owners with some very good fantasy numbers. He
is good for over 40 doubles.
2007 Statistics:
.317 - 22 HR's - 82 RBI's - 91 Runs.
2008 Projection: .310
- 27 HR's - 98 RBI's - 103 Runs.
Bargain Veteran:
Todd Helton - Rockies
Bargain Baby:
Joey Votto - Reds
