8. Rajon Rondo - Boston
Amid several NBA all-star players in Boston, Rajon Rondo still managed
to be an effective player last season. Rondo has matured from 42%
and 20% from field goal and 3-point in his rookie season to 50%
and 31% in 2009. Despite his small size, he was very useful in the
rebounding game, making Rondo a rounded point guard option. He saw
career highs in points (11.9) and assists (8.2) last season, and
he will only continue to get better in 2010. His exceptional speed
and ball-handling skills helped him to a fantastic playoff performance
last season that should carry over into the '10 campaign. If he
continues to develop his outside shooting game, he can skyrocket
into the ranks of point guard elite.
2009 Statistics:
11.9 Pts - 5.2 Reb - 8.2 Ast
2010 Projection: 15.1
Pts - 4.8 Reb - 8.3 Ast
9. Baron Davis - Los Angeles Clippers
Baron Davis fell victim to a horrible Clippers' offense, as he only
averaged 14.9 ppg - his worst scoring output since before he was
traded to the Golden State Warriors. And not only did he fail to
score, he failed to do so effectively, shooting a ghastly 37% from
the field, and 30% from behind the arc. In 2010, he should have
a smoother season as new rookie Blake Griffin looks to draw attention
away from Davis. 'B-Diddy' surely won't be returning to his glory
days in Golden State, but he should become a capable passer with
Griffin on the squad - Davis initially wanted to play in Los Angeles
to team up with big man Elton Brand. Davis should improve in both
the shooting and passing game in '10, but don't get too excited,
he is still on one of the league's worst offenses.
2009 Statistics:
14.9 Pts - 3.7 Reb - 7.7 Ast
2010 Projection: 16.5
Pts - 3.5 Reb - 8.3 Ast

10. Derrick Rose - Chicago
He scored 10 or more points in his first 10 games of his career
- the first Bulls' player to do so since Michael Jordan. Is he the
next Jordan? Most likely not. But the top pick of the 2008 NBA draft
does have some bright days ahead of him - especially in the offensive
game. Like most rookies, Rose has not yet developed an 3-point jumper,
but still shot a respectable 47% from the field. His Rookie of the
Year award, and spectacular playoff performance earns him a spot
on our top point guard rankings. And he will only continue to get
better as an overall player. Rose
will be an all-star,
it's just a matter of how long it'll take for him to reach his full
potential.
2009 Statistics:
16.8 Pts - 3.9 Reb - 6.3 Ast
2010 Projection: 18.1
Pts - 4.1 Reb - 6.9 Ast
