2010 Second Base Preseason Preview
Ben Zobrist
|
 |
Zobrist did a little of everything
from almost every position in 2009 including 27 home runs,
28 doubles, 7 triples and 17 stolen bases. |
7. Ben Zobrist - Rays - 2010 Preview:
Quite the breakout season for Zobrist who smashed 27 home runs and
stole 17 bases with just 501 at bats. His true value is in his possible
position eligibility. He should qualify as both a second basemen
and an outfielder, but also he had 13 games at shortstop, three
games at third base and a game at first base, so depending on your
league rules, he can be quite the utility player. Without the other
position eligibility Zobrist looks like a heck of a fantasy second
basemen with 30 home run, 20 stolen base potential, but he is far
from a sure-thing.
2009 Statistics:
.297 - 27 HR's - 91 RBI's - 91 Runs
2010 Projection: .281
- 24 HR's - 85 RBI's - 87 Runs
8. Brian Roberts - Orioles - 2010 Preview:
You have to like the young offense that the Orioles are building
which includes Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Nick Markakis and free
agent acquisition Garrett Atkins. You put Roberts at the top of
that lineup and you can expect strong production. He hit an amazing
56 doubles to go along with 16 home runs and stole 30 bases and
you should expect more of the same in 2010. His numbers aren't far
off from number three Pedoria which shows you the depth of good
second basemens in the 2010 fantasy baseball draft.
2010 Statistics:
.283 - 16 HR's - 79 RBI's - 110 Runs
2010 Projection: .289
- 13 HR's - 73 RBI's - 114 Runs
9. José López - Mariners - 2010 Preview:
The 26-year-old has shown improvement in each of his years as a
starter finishing with 25 home runs and 96 RBI's in 2009. Lopez
still has room to grow and could break the 30 home run, 100 RBI
barrier, though you should be happy with his 2009 production. The
overall Seattle offense should improve with some solid acquisitions
like Chone Figgins, Milton Bradley and Casey Kotchman and that should
allow Lopez to continue his solid play with the bat. He does represent
a drop-off from the top-eight because of his lack of speed and rather
mediocre batting average.
2009 Statistics:
.272 - 25 HR's - 96 RBI's - 69 Runs
2010 Projection: .279
- 22 HR's - 89 RBI's - 77 Runs
10. Ian Stewart - Rockies - 2010 Preview:
He will be starting at third base, but should qualify as a second
basemen in most leagues. Stewart showed great power slamming 25
home runs with his 425 at bats, but the drawback is he batted just
.228. He could be a lot like a Dan Uggla, but with more potential
and possibly at a cheaper price.
2009 Statistics:
.228 - 25 HR's - 70 RBI's - 74 Runs
2010 Projection: .252
- 34 HR's - 86 RBI's - 84 Runs

Best of the Rest
Casey McGehee - Brewers
He could easily catapult himself into the top-ten if he plays a
full season like he did in 2009 when he batted .301 with 16 home
runs with just 355 at bats. He could be a solid .285, 20 home run
second basemen.
Dan Uggla - Marlins
If you are in the need of power and a second basemen late in the
draft, Uggla will fit the bill for you. He will hurt your batting
average (.243) and if you lose points for strikeouts (154), beware.
Nevertheless, 31 home runs and 90 RBI's is good enough for a lower-level
fantasy starter.
Howie Kendrick - Angels
He really came into his own in the end of the season, batting .358
after the All-Star break and finished at .291. He has good speed
and solid power and could have 15 home run - 15 stolen base potential.
Asdrubal Cabrera - Indians
He is penciled in as the starting shortstop, but he should qualify
as a second basemen. He batted .301 with 6 home runs, 42 doubles
and 17 stolen bases. At 24 he has the potential to improve on all
of those numbers.
Scott Sizemore - Tigers
The rookie should replace Polanco as Detroit's second basemen. Sizemore
was named the Tigers’ Minor League Player of the Year after
batting .308 with 17 home runs and 66 RBI between Double-A Erie
and Triple-A Toledo last season.
Alberto Callaspo - Royals
The Royals acquired Chris Getz and Josh Field in the infield, so
it is unsure exactly where Callaspo will play, but batting .300
with 41 doubles, 8 triples, 11 home runs should get him in the starting
lineup somewhere.
Bargain Veteran:
Adam Kennedy - A's
Bargain Babies:
Scott Sizemore - Tigers
Alberto Callaspo - Royals
