2008 Wide Receiver Preseason Preview
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
|
 |
Houshmandzadeh broke out of the shadow
of his more talented teammate, Chad Johnson, and with his
consistency he has become the safer draft pick of the two. |
8. T.J. Houshmandzadeh - Bengals - 2008 Preview:
T.J. fans will argue that he too belongs in the fantasy stud club,
but with "Ocho-Cinco", trade threats and all, on the opposite
side, he just doesn't quite make it. In addtion, he lacks the burner's
speed to make the big plays. With that said, he is incredibly consistent
and while he doesn't make the big plays, he still had 12 TD catches.
2007 Statistics:
112 Rec -1,143 Yds - 12 TD's.
2008 Projection:
106 Rec - 1,152 Yds -11 TD's.
9. Chad Johnson - Bengals - 2008 Preview:
What are you thinking Ocho-Cinco? The abundance of star fantasy
receivers combined with his off season trade demands have cost Johnson
in his rankings. He has the ability to be #1, as he was place in
2007, but we must question his attitude at this point. Nevertheless,
the talent and statistics are there and Johnson will play, likely
for the Bengals and have another great fantasy season.
2007 Statistics:
93 Rec - 1,440 Yds - 8 TD's.
2008 Projection:
89 Rec - 1,301 Yds - 8 TD's.
10. Brandon Marshall - Broncos - 2008 Preview:
Marshall was on the fasttrack to being fantasy-elite receiver before
a disastorus off season that including a DUI and a worse he hurt
is hand cutting an artery, a vein, a nerve, two tendons and three
muscles in his right arms during an accident in March. He is expected
to be ok towards the end of trining camp, but drafting him should
be done with caution until more news is heard.
2007 Statistics:
102 Rec - 1,345 Yds - 15 TD's.
2008 Projection:
84 Rec - 1,376 Yds - 16 TD's.
11. Steve Smith - Panthers - 2008 Preview:
The one-time fantasy stud has fallen far and even know he is right
under Chad Johnson in the rankings, he represents a far fall. With
that said, Smith has the talent to make a comeback and a lot of
that depends on quarterback Jake Delhomme who has Tommy John surgery.
The word is that Delhomme is not only healthy, but his arm is stronger
than before. Smith is good for at least 80 catches and 1,100 yards
and probably a bit more, but he has to prove that he is a fantasy
elite receiver before the rankings show it.
2007 Statistics:
87 Rec - 1,002 Yds - 7 TD's.
2008 Projection:
90 Rec - 1,238 Yds - 9 TD's.

12. Torry Holt- Rams - 2008 Preview:
The veteran is showing signs of falling, but not much. He had another
93 catches and 1,189 yards was a repeat of 2006, but his touchdowns
went down from 10 to 7, but worse are his yards per catch have fallen
significantly over the years. He is becoming more of a possession
receiver than a big-play receiver, which isn't usually good news
in fantasy land. A healthy Rams offense should keep him on target
for another 90 catch 1,100-1,200 yard season.
2007 Statistics:
93 Rec - 1,189 Yds - 7 TD's.
2008 Projection:
90 Rec - 1,201 Yds - 8 TD's.
13. Roy Williams - Lions - 2008 Preview:
Williams is a big-time talent who is stuck in Detroit where he has
either has not had a good quarterback to throw to him, no run game
to help, no defense to get the ball back or he himself has been
hampered by injures. In 2007 he once again fell short of his potential
with all of the above including an injury that cost him the final
four games of the season. Jon Kitna is an adequate quarterback and
gives a glimmer of hope for Williams fantasy stats in 2008, not
to mention it is a contract year for Williams.
2007 Statistics:
63 Rec - 836 Yds - 5 TD's.
2008 Projection:
87 Rec - 1,221 Yds - 7 TD's.
