2010 Wide Receiver Preseason Preview
Brandon Marshall
|
 |
It doesn't seem to matter who the quarterback
throwing to him is, Brandon Marshall can rack up around
100 catches with just about any of them and the upcoming
Chad Henne can't wait to find out in Miami. |
4. Brandon Marshall - Dolphins - 2010 Preview:
It is amazing how similar Brandon Marshall and Wes Welker are statistically
and yet so different mentally and physically. The 6-4 Marshall too
has three consecutive 100 catch seasons, but the difference is Marshall
can be a play-maker. He has the potential to put up Andre Johnson
type numbers. Yet mentally Marshall has a lot of growing to do and
thus carries some risk at all times.
The biggest question that surrounds Marshall is his move to the
Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are putting together a pretty good
team starting with 2008 second-round pick quarterback Chad Henne.
As a first year starter he threw for 2,878 yards in 14 games with
12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He must take a step up in 2010
for Marshall to dream of Johnson type numbers.
The Dolphins had decent receivers before acquiring Marshall with
Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess and solid tight end play from Anthony
Fasano, but none of them are good enough to take away from looks
from Marshall.
The hope in Miami is that Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown provide
a strong run game while Brandon Marshall helps Chad Henne become
a legitimate NFL quarterback. If that happens another 100 plus reception
season will be inline for Marshall.

2010 Projection: 98

5. Roddy White - Falcons - 2010 Preview:
Another consistent receiver who will not let you down, Roddy White,
has averaged 85 catches for 1,245 yards and eight touchdowns over
the last three seasons. Doubt the offensive problems the Falcons
came across in 2009 White proved he is a game-breaker by catching
a career high eleven touchdowns.
The Falcons have one of the best young quarterbacks in Matt Ryan.
He did take a small step backwards in 2009, mostly due to his injury
and teammates injuries, but he nevertheless remains one of the best
upcoming quarterbacks in the NFL which is exactly what it takes
to make a fantasy stud receiver.
Tony Gonzalez caught 83 passes over the middle which really helped
White be freed up on the sidelines for more big plays and thus more
touchdowns. It made up for the loss of looks that Gonzales took
away. That combined with a very solid Michael Jenkins on the other
side and a strong run game make Roddy White a Reggie Wayne like
safe pick in 2010.

6. Calvin Johnson - Lions - 2010 Preview:
Johnson might be the best receiver in the league, but he struggled
last year with his rookie quarterback and all-around horrible team.
Even with that and missing two games with injury, Johnson nearly
managed 70 catches and 1,000 yards.
The key to Calvin Johnson's success will be the growth of 2009 #1
overall pick, Matthew Stafford. He went through all the growing
pains of a rookie, including missing six games because of injury.
Doubt having poor statistics, Stafford showed that he can be a great
quarterback if he can have some talent around him.
The Lions hope to get running back Kevin Smith back from injury,
though it will be slow going and thus they drafted running back
Jahvid Best at the end of the first-round.
Questions still surround
a rather below average offensive line. Hopes are that 2008 #1 pick
Gosder Cherilus can take a big step up and become the tackle they
drafted him to be and that free agent Rob Sims can plug a hole at
guard. A consistent run game and a good pass blocking will lead
to Matthew Stafford's success in 2010 and thus Calvin Johnson's success.
2009 Statistics:

2010 Projection: 89
Rec - 1,322 Yds - 10 TD's
7. Randy Moss - Patriots - 2010 Preview:
The great Randy Moss is still among the best fantasy wide receivers
in the NFL, but he also remains somewhat inconsistent and thus a
bit of a gamble especially when considering his age.
Inconsistent for Moss means you may get his 2007 performance of
98 catches, 1,483, 23 touchdowns or you may get his more human 2009
performance of 83 catches, 1,264 yard 13 touchdowns. It is a win-win
situation, but it makes it difficult how high to draft him.
At age 33, his best years are behind him, even if some good years
are still ahead. The bottom line is Moss has 926 catches for 14,465
yards in his career and he has to take a down turn at some point
and this makes him a bit of a risky pick in 2010.

2010 Projection: 80
Rec - 1,231 Yds - 14 TD's
