2008 Wide Receiver Preseason Preview
Randy Moss
|
 |
Back in familiar territory. Randy Moss
returns as the hands-down preseason favorite to be the #1
receiver in the 2008 fantasy football season. |
1. Randy Moss - Patriots - 2008 Preview:
Moss move to the Patriots was better than anyone could have predicted.
He immediately connected with Brady and the rest is history. He
dominated in every category catching nearly 98 passes for nearly
1,500 yards and an incredible 23 touchdowns. There is no reason
not to expect Moss and Brady doing more of the same in 2008, though
it is always safe to assume some falloff after an amazing season
like 2007. The only worry with Moss is how he and the rest of the
Patriots will react to their stunning Super Bowl loss.
2007 Statistics:
98 Rec - 1,493 Yds - 23 TD's.
2008 Projection:
93 Rec - 1,395 Yds - 17 TD's.
2. Terrel Owens - Cowboys - 2008 Preview:
In most seasons 15 touchdown receptions would be plenty to lead
the NFL, but the Patriots 2008 offensive numbers were nothing like
most seasons and therefore Terrel Owens 15 touchdown receptions
were an afterthought. He still has the speed and size to make big
plays and with his broken finger behind him, his drops should decline
a bit. The Cowboys offense doesn't have any holes and should return
strong in 2008 and Owens should be up for another big fantasy season.
2007 Statistics:
81 Rec - 1,355 Yds - 15 TD's.
2008 Projection:
84 Rec - 1,376 Yds - 16 TD's.
3. Reggie Wayne - Colts - 2008 Preview:
Wayne showed in '07 that he could be the best receiver in football.
With Marvin Harrison injured much of the season Wayne took advantage
and had a career year eclipsing the magic marks of 100 catches and
1,500 yards. Harrison is expected back in 2008 and Anthony Gonzales
should take another step in his maturity so it is doubtful that
Wayne will improve his '07 numbers and his numbers should see a
slight decrease, but he will still finish among the best playing
for the high-flying Colts.
2007 Statistics:
104 Rec - 1,510 Yds - 10 TD's.
2008 Projection:
93 Rec - 1,431 Yds - 10 TD's.
4. Larry Fitzgerald - Cardinals - 2008 Preview:
Fitz basically had a repeat of his breakout 2005 season topping
100 receptions and 1,400 yards in each. There is no doubt about
his talents, he is one of the best receivers in football and he
has the ability to finish as the #1 receiver in fantasy football
unless Moss and the Patriots have another "off-the-charts"
season. The questions for Fitz are who will throw to him and will
a healthy/signed Anquan Boldin bring down his stats. Boldin remains
unsigned as of the writing of this preview, but clearly if he plays
Fitz's stats will fall. As for the quarterback situation, it is
hard to see Matt Leinart not given every chance to start and it
seems Warner and Fitz have a better connection. With those outside
factors you cannot expect another 100 catch 1,400 yard season from
Fitz.
2007 Statistics:
100 Rec - 1,409 Yds - 10 TD's.
2008 Projection:
91 Rec - 1,368 Yds - 11 TD's.

5. Braylon Edwards - Browns - 2008 Preview:
The big-time talent came through in 2007 when he was healthy and
had a quarterback to throw to him. It will be hard to expect 16
touchdowns again in 2008, but Edwards size and big-play ability
makes it possible every season. Edwards is a lot like T.O. in that
matter, but will likely fall to you a round later in the draft.
The only question about Edwards fantasy potential will be answered
by QB Derek Anderson's 2008 performance.
2007 Statistics:
80 Rec - 1,289 Yds - 16 TD's.
2008 Projection:
84 Rec - 1,309 Yds - 15 TD's.
6. Andre Johnson - Texans - 2008 Preview:
Johnson caught 103 passes in 2006 establishing himself as a top
receiver, but lacked the big-plays to be a fantasy stud receiver.
In 2007 he added the big-play to his arsenal and was one of the
best in the league doubt an injury that cost him 7 games. The depth
at wide receiver in 2008 shows when Andre Johnson is at #6. There
is no doubt that he could finish as #1 under the right circumstances.
2007 Statistics:
60 Rec - 851 Yds - 8 TD's.
2008 Projection:
91 Rec - 1,336 Yds - 13 TD's.
7. Marques Colston - Saints - 2008 Preview:
Colston was a huge surprise as rookie 7th-round-draft-pick in 2006
and proved he was not a fluke in 2007 by improving his stats across
the board. Not bad considering al the problems the Saints had in
2007. At 6-4 231 pounds he is like a small tight end with receiver's
speed and makes an excellent red zone target. 2008 should see Colston
make a run at being a top-five fantasy receiver.
2007 Statistics:
98 Rec - 1,202 Yds -11 TD's.
2008 Projection:
101 Rec - 1,301 Yds - 12 TD's.
